Music Director
Part-Time, Non-Exempt
Compensation: $14,000-$16,000 annually, based on qualifications and experience
Reports To: Pastor for ministry direction, scheduling, and performance; Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) for compensation and personnel policy
Position Purpose
The Music Ministry Director provides spiritual, musical, and organizational leadership for the adult choir and the broader music ministry of Roberta Church. In partnership with the Pastor, Accompanist, staff, and volunteers, the Director selects and prepares music that supports Scripture, the Christian season, the message and movement of worship, and the congregation’s participation. This is ministry first: musical excellence serves God, strengthens the gathered church, and helps people worship with heart, mind, soul, and voice.
Essential Responsibilities
1. Adult Choir and Worship Leadership
• Direct the adult choir in weekly rehearsals, Sunday morning warm-ups, Sunday worship, and scheduled seasonal or special services; remain present on Sundays unless approved time away has been arranged.
• Teach vocal parts, interpretation, diction, phrasing, balance, and worshipful presentation while adapting instruction to volunteers of varying musical ability.
• Build a Christ-centered choir culture marked by prayer, preparation, encouragement, accountability, hospitality, and joy; recruit and develop singers as opportunities arise.
2. Music Selection and Worship Planning
• Select choral music that reflects sound Christian theology, musical quality, the choir’s ability, Roberta Church’s primarily traditional worship style, the Christian calendar, and the Pastor’s direction for worship.
• Coordinate music plans with the Pastor and Accompanist. The Pastor retains final responsibility for worship; the Director leads choral and assigned music-ministry planning within that direction.
• Provide accurate music, bulletin, order-of-worship, slide, livestream, and rehearsal information by established deadlines; communicate changes promptly.
3. Rehearsal, Personnel, and Ministry Coordination
• Plan rehearsals that are organized, productive, respectful of time, and prepared in advance; ensure music and rehearsal priorities are communicated clearly to the Accompanist and singers.
• Coordinate soloists, ensembles, guest musicians, men’s chorus, and other assigned music participants, including needed rehearsals and worship details.
• Attend staff or worship-planning meetings as requested and maintain cooperative relationships with the Pastor, Accompanist, church staff, media team, volunteers, and congregation.
4. Handbells, Special Services, and Resources
• Support or direct the handbell ministry when assigned and qualified; when another leader directs bells, coordinate scheduling, communication, and worship integration.
• Provide music leadership, when scheduled and available, for Advent, Christmas Eve, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, revivals, patriotic services, funerals, and other special services. These services are included in annual compensation when the Director is available.
• Manage the choral music library, music ordering, records, and approved budget; maintain required CCLI usage information and follow church purchasing and reimbursement procedures.
Qualifications
Required
• A personal Christian faith and conduct consistent with the mission and ministry of Roberta Church.
• Experience directing an adult church choir or comparable vocal ensemble; ability to read music, teach vocal parts, select appropriate worship music, and direct confidently in rehearsal and worship.
• Strong leadership, organization, communication, preparation, dependability, discretion, and patience with volunteers of varying musical ability.
• Working knowledge of hymns, choral anthems, traditional church music, seasonal worship planning, and collaboration with pastors, accompanists, staff, and volunteers.
Preferred
• Formal education in music, church music, music education, or a related field; handbell experience; and experience planning seasonal programs or special services.
Schedule, Time Away, and Coverage
• The position includes one weekly adult choir rehearsal during choir season, Sunday warm-up and worship leadership, music selection and preparation, communication, library administration, and additional rehearsals, meetings, and services as scheduled. Handbell rehearsal is included when assigned.
• The Director receives two weeks of personal time off each year, prorated to the approved employment level, including up to two paid Sundays away. Additional Sundays require prior approval and may be unpaid unless otherwise authorized by the Pastor and SPRC.
• Time away should be requested as early as possible. The Director will assist in identifying qualified coverage; the Pastor or designee approves substitutes and compensation arrangements.
Performance and Employment Expectations
• Successful performance is demonstrated by worship music that is theologically sound, well prepared, musically appropriate, aligned with pastoral direction, and effective in developing choir participation and congregational worship.
• Employment is contingent upon required background and drug screening and compliance with applicable personnel, safeguarding, copyright, budget, and facility-use policies.
• This description identifies primary duties but is not exhaustive. Responsibilities may be adjusted by the Pastor in consultation with the SPRC as ministry needs change.
